Rear Cover Removal

Removing the Rear Cover from the iPod Main Body
- While holding down on the iPod, gently flip the Hard Drive over, laying it on its back.
- Now use the plastic spudger to release the ZIF connector for the stereo plug.
- Pull the cable out from the ZIF connector for the stereo plug and the rear cover is detached from the main body of the iPod.
Removing the Battery from the Rear Cover
- Using the spudger slowly lift the battery from the rear cover.
USE EXTREME CAUTION AS THERE IS A VERY SMALL RIBBON CABLE UNDER THE BATTERY. THIS CABLE CONNECTS THE HOLD SWITCH TO THE STEREO PLUG WIRING HARNESS. THIS CABLE CONNECTS THE HOLD SWITCH TO THE STEREO PLUG WIRING HARNESS. FOLLOW THE CABLE FROM THE STEREO PLUG AND ENSURE YOU DO NOT DAMAGE IT WHILE REMOVING THE BATTERY
- Once the battery is removed, please dispose of properly if not being reused.
Hold Switch and Stereo Plug removal
- Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove 2 screws at the hold switch.
- It is likely that a sticky film is covering these screws; you will need to remove this first.
- Remove the other 2 screws from the stereo plug.
- Peel the adhesive tape holding the cables to the rear cover.
- Gently remove the hold switch and stereo plug from the rear cover.
Hold Switch Disassembly
(***only perform these steps when reusing the hold switch)
- Position the hold button so it is facing you.
- Remove the Phillips head screw from the top of the hold button and place it in a secure place.
- Remove the metal frame from the hold switch.
- Peel the switch circuit off from the metal frame. Clean any parts with minimal amounts of electrical cleaner if necessary.
Assembly of New Hold Switch and Stereo Plug
Replacing a New Switch Circuit to the reused housing in an iPod
(***only perform these steps when reusing the hold switch)
- Place the new switch circuit onto the metal frame to test their alignment first.
- Bend the cable slightly to ensure a proper fit.
- Remove the protective film from the adhesive of the new switch circuit.
- Paste the new switch circuit to the metal frame ensuring that the switch lever overhangs on the side with the cutout.
- Press firmly to ensure a proper bond.
- Place the metal fame back into the Hold switch.
- Ensure that switch lever is inside the slot of the Hold switch.
- Operate the Hold switch to confirm that switch lever actuates properly.
- Screw the Phillips head screw on the top of the hold button.
Installing the Hold Switch and Stereo Plug into the Rear Cover
- Place the assembled Hold switch and the Stereo Plug back into the rear cover.
- Ensure they sit securely into the rear cover.
- Fasten the 2 Phillips screws on the Hold switch to the rear cover.
- Operate the hold switch to confirm its functionality.
- Insert the 2 remaining screws on the Stereo Plug to the rear cover.
- Replace the adhesive tape onto the rear cover to secure the cables.
Battery Installation
- Place the new battery back into the same location in the rear cover. Ensure that the stereo plug cable tab is out of the way when placing battery into the rear cover.
- Lay the hard drive into the bay ensuring that the rubber cushions lay flat into the frame.
- Use the plastic spudger to adjust the rubber cushion when necessary.
- Lift the rear cover onto the iPod
- Gently take the battery cable and insert it into the connector and secure by pushing down on the connector.
Installing the Rear Cover
- Ensure that the 2 “C” rubber cushions are inserted securely at the bottom of the iPod.
- Place the rear cover to the left of the front cover with the cables still attached.
- Align the stereo plug cable in a way that it can be reattached to the stereo ZIF connector.
- Gently slide the cable into the stereo plug ZIF connector.
- Once aligned, secure the stereo plug ZIF connector by pressing down the latch.
- The depth lines on the cable can verify correct connection of the stereo plug cable.
- Lay the hard drive into the bay ensuring that the rubber cushions lay flat into the frame.
- Use the plastic spudger to adjust the rubber cushion when necessary.
- Lift the rear cover over the iPod main body, but do not close the front and rear cover yet.
- At the same time, gently take the battery cable, insert it into the vertical ZIF connector, and secure it by pushing down on the ZIF latch.
- Gently align the front and rear cover.
Attaching the Rear Cover
- Compress the edges of the front and rear cover to secure the two pieces together.
- You will hear and feel the catches latching. As they latch, there should not be any gaps between the two covers.
- You are DONE!!!! Lets test it out
- Ensure you Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Set it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
